Experience

I am an experienced employment lawyer advising companies, employees, HR professionals, in house lawyers, senior management and senior executives on a full range of employment issues, both contentious and non-contentious. I advise on issues such as settlement agreements, family friendly rights, discrimination, disciplinary and grievance issues, managing attendance, Employment Tribunal claims, trade union issues, whistleblowing, redundancy, restructuring, corporate transactions, outsourcing, insourcing and TUPE.

My style is to listen to my client’s aims and then provide advice in a format to suit them on how the law can be deployed to reach those aims in the most effective and practical way.

Recent work handled by me includes advising:

* advising a group of senior executives on their settlement agreements following their exit from a large national company;

* a global chemical manufacturer on an equal pay claim brought by a senior manager within the business;

* a leading private medical insurance broker on their arrangements with senior consultants;

* a large retailer on a sensitive discrimination claim;

* drafting and negotiating the employment warranties and indemnities for various warehouse agreements for another large retailer;

* a local and long established food manufacturer on various employee relations issues;

* negotiating a package worth circa two years’ net salary for a former senior executive at a blue chip company.

I regularly run issue-driven workshops and has written a number of published articles.

 I qualified and practised with Addleshaw Goddard for 10 years before joining Shoosmiths in 2012 as a partner and setting up a successful employment team.  In March 2015 I joined Analysis Legal, and two months later I also joined Athena Law as a non-member partner heading up their employment team.

Excellent HR Advice

I worked with Emily whilst she was an HR Officer at Primark. Emily was very professional and always displayed a sound knowledge of employment law and HR issues. She understood and followed Company procedures and came up with innovative solutions. She is likeable, approachable, easy to work with and would be an asset to any HR team.

Case Studies

Resolving a potential sex discrimination and part time worker dispute

Advised a large group of part time women on proposed changes to their commission structure which would have impacted their pay, in some cases, leading to a 75% reduction in monthly income.  Clients had gone through grievance procedure but employer continued to insist that the proposed changes were fair and that the current scheme operated too favourably for part time employees.  Instructed to draft an appeal letter.  Spent a lot of time exploring the existing scheme and the proposed amendments, working through specific examples.  Wrote a detailed letter setting out the grounds of appeal and why the proposed changes would lead to a claim of part time worker discrimination and/or sex discrimination.  Following appeal hearing, the existing structure was maintained and the employer agreed to consider implementing much fairer changes which would impact the whole of the workforce rather than just part time workers.

Trade Union issue

Advised a company on a difficult trade union representative who was being taken through a disciplinary procedure.  This situation had the potential to cause significant ER issues.  Guided the client through the process and helped them to secure a successful outcome – trade union representative was not allowed to negotiate on behalf of employees until he had been successfully retrained and a full time official was appointed to deal with employee issues in the interim

Redundancy Claim

Successfully represented a company in rebutting a claim for enhanced redundancy pay
