Napthens LLP

I am Head of the Family Team at Napthens Solicitors. We have 6 offices in Lancashire and Cumbria. I work from our Preston office, but also spend time in our other offices in Blackpool, Blackburn, Southport, Kendal and Penrith.

I advise clients on all aspects of Family Law, which includes divorce and financial issues arising from the divorce, cohabitation disputes, children issues such as where the child should live and how much time they should spend with the other parent. I also advise  on Pre  Nuptial agreements  and Separation agreements.

I am a Collaborative Lawyer. This is an extra qualification which enables me to assist clients in joint meetings with their spouse and spouse's solicitor to reach an amicable settlement on all aspects of their relationship breakdown without going to court. The parties agree at the outset of proceedings not to go to court and sign an agreement to the effect.

I strongly believe in assisting my clients in reaching an amicable financial settlement which is best for them and will be approved by the court. If that is not possible then I assertively fight my client's position in any court proceedings to assist them in reaching the best possible outcome for them and their family.

Previous Employment

Blackhurst Budd1993 - 2000

I trained with Blackhursts Solicitors in Blackpool- now Blackhurst Budd. I began to specialise in family law in about 1996. I joined the Law Society's Children Panel in 1999. I moved to Cuddy Woods and Cochrane Solicitors, also in Blackpool in May 2000. C

I am a very experienced family solicitor and Head of Family Law at Napthens solicitors. I have practised in the area of family law since the mid 1990's, dealing with divorce and financial disputes, as well as relationship breakdown and children issues. I am a collaborative lawyer. This means that I am trained to deal with family disputes in a collaborative way if both parties want to use this route.

Collaborative Law involves both parties appointing a collaboratively trained solicitor and each party and their lawyers sign a written agreement to confirm that they will sit round the table to negotiate a resolution to their family dispute without the need for contested court proceedings. This approach works very well.

I am a firm believer in resolving family issues between the parties if at all possible. Of course sometimes it is necessary to issue court proceedings and when that is the case I strive to represent my clients in the most effective way to achieve the best possible result for them.

I proactively encourage clients to enter into pre nuptial agreements or cohabitation agreements at the start of their marriage or  relationship and thereby avoid the need for lengthy court proceedings should their relationship break down in the future.

I am a member of the Law Society's Children Panel and in the past have represented children within care proceedings. I no longer deal with legal aid work but the experience which I have obtained in this are of law has assisted me in having an in-depth understanding of children matters for all clients.
