White Collar (Legal and Admin) Ltd

I hold Specialist Paralegal Qualifications in Personal Injury and Civil Litigation and having completed my qualifications, I set up White Collar Legal to assist mainly SME's and Litigants in Person in April 2013 when the government announced and brought in to law the increase in the Small Claims Limit from £5,000 to £10,000.

I assist not only SMEs and Litigants in Person but I also attend Court on a regular basis as a Solicitor Agent in Landlord/Tenant and Mortgage repossession; enforcement hearings and personal injury claims.  I have also assisted and represented litigants in Small Claim Hearings.

Because of the way I work and our target market, our fees are much cheaper than those of our solicitor colleagues; making our legal services affordable and accessible.  Our company is one of the first legal firms to become Trading Standards Approved in the Wirral .

I am also a Tier 4 Member of the Professional Paralegal Register and hold a Practising Certificate with the PPR which also affirms our commitment to customer and client service.

Patient and Methodical

Philip provided a large amount of his cost effective time in drafting our Will. He was patient and methodical with each aspect, advising us clearly of our position and listening to our concerns. We were anxious to conclude the process swiftly as we were flying to New York without our children. We were not disappointed. Philip's lucid presentation of the detail in all its aspects went a long way to making our experience reassuring and comfortable.

Highly Recommended

Philip always produced work and gave advice of the highest standard and always met deadlines that ultimately helped me in being successful in each of my claims. Philip will always look to ensure the best possible outcome for his client and that costs are kept low, only taking on further instructions when it's required. I have learnt an incredible amount about the county court system through Philip's guidance and now feel confident in presenting claims in a court room and defending myself when required. I can highly recommend his services for anyone who needs legal assistance. Philip provides quality legal advice at the fraction of the cost of solicitors.

Recent Win in a Small Claims Court

This is an example of a recent case I won in the Small Claims Court.  It's not about the compensation amount as that was a fixed amount but the level of costs award as a result of my written submissions.

Young Lawyer
The winding career path of a paralegal 7 February 2014

Philip Nam's experiences continue to push him to the top

There are many positives to being a paralegal. One of those positives is that you will be called, by the Law Society, no matter your age and number of years' experience, a Junior Lawyer. Membership of the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) is free and automatic to student members of the Law Society enrolled through the SRA, which includes those working as paralegals, trainees, and solicitors with up to 5 years active PQE. So if I stay a paralegal for life, I'll always be a Junior Lawyer.

As a paralegal, I have worked as a director's personal assistant in two different companies. One of those companies was just a one-man band, while the other has around 15-20 employees. Both, while in the same area of law, are very much different.

Modern day law firm

Both experiences have given me insight in to the running and management of a modern day law firm. This has helped me in my development both as a leader, manager and as a person. Working at the highest level has helped my communication skills and the way I present myself to others. It has been tough to develop my way of doing things in the style of 'low level employee' with little or no responsibility, to someone who is a leader or sets the status quo.

I joined the one-man band in its infancy. The firm was just over eight months old. I'd been the sole partner's secretary in a previous firm. I had of course been out of the legal world for around four years and was just returning - how things had changed! I was desperate for the work and therefore had to enter the firm as self-employed, which, in addition to the 80 mile round trip a day, made things very stressful indeed.

This was a very tough reintroduction into the legal sector with many changes having taken place in the personal injury sector. The one-man band had no-one to report to and he had set up the company with little or no assistance or staff. I was essentially his first full time 'employee' and therefore had to relearn the ropes quickly. It was a good job I had a good memory, was an excellent administrator and was very quick at the work that I did.

Fountain of knowledge

I had slipped easily back into the role of secretary and also assisted in dealing with referrers, clients and all the other associated persons that a claim would normally involve. The relationship worked to a point but ultimately, the excess travelling and the arrangement took its toll and I left with a fountain of knowledge that I never had before, 18 months later.

Since leaving, I joined a company that has promoted me within a month from legal secretary to claims handler and then 12 months later to director's personal assistant, and then to costs manager, while continuing to work alongside the director. I have built upon my knowledge of claims and learnt costs. I have also learnt about compliance, regulation and the issues law firms are facing in this industry. I have had the opportunity to develop my knowledge from just the bog standard RTA PI claim to other areas of personal injury, and have also built up knowledge of other areas of civil litigation including financial mis-selling, landlord and tenant and contract. In addition, we have also dealt with will drafting.

Ultimately, the experience that I have had in both firms over the past six years has and continues to push me to my limits. I continue to learn and I have picked up a hell of a lot of knowledge on how to run and manage a law firm including marketing, accounting and compliance.

Philip Nam is currently costs manager and personal assistant to director at Byrne & Co solicitors. He is also the owner of freelance paralegal practice, White Collar
